About Me

"I feel privileged to live in a place of such ever-changing beauty. My goal is to convey the softness of the light on the water, sand and dunes in my pastel paintings. The atmosphere on the Cape is so ethereal because we are surrounded by water. Being out on the beaches and water in the early morning mist, to be able capture this beauty....I can think of nothing more wonderful. Everyday I wake up and am thankful that I now have the time to create on paper what is so pleasing to the visual eye."

Ginny Nickerson received her formal education at Garland Junior College in Boston, MA. and The University of Denver, Co. where she received a BA in Printmaking. During the summer of 1970 she spent two months on a tour of Europe visiting 12 countries and seeing many of the museums and pieces of art which she had been studying in school. This trip had a lasting impression on her and helped mold her love of art into a career. After college she returned to her hometown, Chatham, on Cape Cod where she began her art career in printmaking and watercolors. Married in 1977 and living in the Worcester area she started painting a series of watercolors of flowers and showed her work in several galleries and co-ops in the Boston and Worcester areas. While still married she moved back to Chatham in 1984 and changed careers, purchasing her family business, The Children's Shop which was started in 1955. In 2006 after 22 years of owning and operating her business she sold it and has been actively studying pastels which has become her newest passion!

Ms. Nickerson has studied with Carol Garvey, Rosalie Nadeau, Susan Ogilvie, Sally Strand,Terry Ludwig, Diana DeSantis, Barbara Janice, Margaret Dyer and Joseph McGurl learning new techniques in pastels and oils. She is a member of The Creative Arts Center, The Pastel Society of Cape Cod and Cape Cod Art Association, becoming an ARTIST member, 2006. She and photographer, Shareen Davis were co-owners of Nickerson Art Gallery, in Chatham, MA from 2010 to 2016 . They represented 25 local artists "Representing Cape Cod-Its People, Environment and History Through Local Artists."

Currently, Ms. Nickerson is working on a series of people shellfishing. "I personally love to go out on the clam flats and dig for clams. There is something therapeutic about the quiet, the smell of the water, the air and then there is the bonus of taking home something to eat that you have harvested. I admire the people who have chosen to work so hard to provide us with shellfish and fish. I realized that I wanted to document this wonderful way of life as well as to acknowledge and honor the shell fishermen and women. When I started my first painting I realized I was really excited about this series and felt privileged to be able to paint such a diversified and dedicated group of people. I'm having a great time photographing and painting all that I love about the Cape and I'm meeting lots of wonderful people in the meantime who are doing what they love to do!"
